PAC-MAN Through the Years: From Arcade Icon to Nex Playground
A Hungry Hero Arrives on Nex Playground
For many of us, PAC-MAN has been around as long as the sun has been in the sky.
Since first appearing in arcades, he's made his way to home consoles, traded pixels for increasingly detailed graphics, and eventually sprouted a face, arms, and legs. He's broken free from his maze, popped up in movies and Super Bowl ads, and even fought his way through a dark sci-fi world.
However, like PAC-MAN himself, life is a circle, and through it all, he returns to his original form on Nex Playground—with a few new tricks up his (non-existent) sleeves.
Whether you're new to PAC-MAN or want to take a walk down memory lane, read on for some fun facts and a look at five key games from his history.
A Hungry Idea
It could be argued that PAC-MAN, a character known for his never-ending appetite, was born from hunger itself.
Video game developer Toru Iwatani was eating pizza at a restaurant, deep in thought about his latest project. He wanted to make a game about eating. After grabbing a slice of pizza, he noticed the empty space looked like a mouth. This ordinary moment is what inspired PAC-MAN's iconic shape.
Iwatani must have been hungry, because PAC-MAN's original name, “Puck Man,” also has its roots in eating. It was inspired by the Japanese onomatopoeic expression “paku-paku,” which describes the repeated opening and closing of one's mouth while eating.
So in 1980, a hungry man created a hungry character who continues eating to this very day.
But would audiences have an appetite for his creation? At the time, arcades were something of a battlefield. Games involving shooting, spaceships, combat, and explosions were wildly popular—Space Invaders, Asteroids, and Galaxian among them. Rather than follow the trend, Iwatani wanted to create something more approachable that could attract people who might not typically find themselves in an arcade, including women and couples.
The result was a colorful character, a simple premise, and a game almost anyone could pick up and play. Little did Iwatani know that PAC-MAN would become one of the most recognizable faces in gaming history, and his journey was just beginning.
Five PAC-MAN Games You Should Know
With more than four decades of games under his belt, PAC-MAN has appeared in more titles than we could possibly cover here. Instead of a full history, this list will walk through five games that show how this arcade legend has evolved over the years—including PAC-MAN on Nex.
PAC-MAN (1980): The maze-chase game that created the phenomenon
PAC-MAN perfected the formula of simple but compelling arcade gameplay, with an iconic hero and four persistent Ghosts to challenge him every step of the way.
But those Ghosts aren't quite as simple as they look. Blinky, Inky, Pinky, and Clyde each have their own methods of chasing PAC-MAN, meaning you'll need to learn their strategies if you want to make your grand escape. And when things get a little too close for comfort, there's always a Power Pellet to turn the tables and send your pursuers running.
Eating PAC-Dots, avoiding capture, chasing high scores, and occasionally chomping fruits and Ghosts was a formula people simply couldn't get enough of.
PAC-MAN World (1999): PAC-MAN goes 3D
The 20th anniversary of PAC-MAN saw him embark on a new kind of adventure with PAC-MAN WORLD, a side-scrolling platformer that added dimension to his character in more ways than one.
With 3D graphics, PAC-MAN went from a flat, circular icon to a fully realized character, complete with a rounded body, expressive features, and those adorable little arms and legs.
More importantly, PAC-MAN steps outside his maze, where the stakes are just a bit higher than eating fruits and earning points. The villainous Toc-Man has kidnapped PAC-MAN's family and friends, and he must rescue them by navigating Ghost Island. His journey takes him through pirate ships, ancient ruins, and even space, with all sorts of fearsome enemies in his path.
The game proved to be successful, with PAC-MAN WORLD 2 and PAC-MAN WORLD 3 following in the years to come. By 2006, the series had sold nearly 2 million copies.
PAC-MAN Battle Royale (2011): PAC-MAN becomes a four-player battle
What if everyone inside the maze was PAC-MAN?PAC-MAN Battle Royale answers this cheeky hypothetical with the hungry hero's first four-player competitive arcade game. Up to four PAC-MEN clash in the maze and strive to be the last PAC-MAN standing—but don't forget about Blinky, Inky, Pinky, and Clyde!
Instead of eating all the PAC-Dots and racking up impressive scores, PAC-MAN Battle Royale is all about survival. With Ghosts chasing PAC-MAN, PAC-MEN chasing other PAC-MEN, and Power Pellets offering a chance to turn the tables, the maze can get crowded quickly.
You'll need to know when to run, when to chase, and when to grab a Power Pellet if you want to win this battle royale.
PAC-MAN 256 (2015): PAC-MAN turns his greatest glitch into a game
Did you know that if you reach Level 256 in the original PAC-MAN, half the maze becomes corrupted and the level is impossible to complete?
PAC-MAN 256 took inspiration from this famous integer overflow glitch and made an endless arcade game, where the glitch itself is chasing you.
Unlike the original PAC-MAN, where the maze stays fixed, here the maze is constantly changing. As the glitch devours the bottom of the maze, you'll have to make split-second decisions about which route to take to move upward. The addition of power-ups like lasers, ice blocks, and bombs levels the playing field against the Ghosts, giving PAC-MAN the necessary tools to waka waka another day.
In other words, PAC-MAN 256 turned one of gaming's most famous mistakes into a whole new way to play.
PAC-MAN on Nex (2026): Your body controls PAC-MAN
In many ways, PAC-MAN on Nex is a celebration of everything PAC-MAN has learned over the years.
It's a return to the original maze, except now PAC-MAN is powered through your movement. In Classic Mode, you use your arm as a joystick to guide him through every twist and turn, bringing a whole new feel to the familiar arcade experience.
PAC-MAN on Nex also brings back many of the elements players have loved over the years, with two new game modes that get the whole family playing.
First, Showdown Mode brings back the thrilling four-player battle royale concept with a few exciting twists. Now, you can use your body to JUMP over Ghosts and other PAC-MEN. Players who get eliminated will return as Ghosts to keep the fun going, giving you a chance to chomp the PAC-MAN who eliminated you.
Then, Team Chomp puts everyone on the same side, challenging players to work together to eat all the PAC-Dots on the screen. Both new game modes also introduce Power-Ups like Jelly Balloon Drop, Slime, and Speed Boost, giving players even more ways to shake up the maze.
From classic arcade gameplay to multiplayer mayhem, PAC-MAN on Nex brings decades of evolution into one playful experience.

From the Arcade to the Living Room
In 1980, Toru Iwatani wanted to make a game that anyone could pick up and enjoy.
Over forty years later, the hunger for PAC-dots and Power Pellets rages on.
Like Iwatani, Nex Playground believes games can bring people together. But instead of inviting more people into the arcade, Nex is bringing the action to the living room, encouraging kids and parents to move, play, and share the same adventure.
That's the idea behind Nex Playground: turning screen time into active, social play that the whole family can enjoy together.
